HAND ELIZABETH J. AGE 89, PASS...

HAND ELIZABETH J. Age 89, passed away on Thursday, December 3, 2015, at her home, at Longwood at Oakmont. She was born on September 7,1926, to the late Dr. I. Franklin and Florence (Clark) Hand in Greensburg, PA. She was a graduate of Peabody High School in East Liberty. She was a summa cum laude graduate of The University of Pittsburgh with a B.S. degree in math and physics. She also had a Master's Degree in Education with a concentration in counseling from The University of Pittsburgh. She taught high school math at Chartiers and Taylor Allderdice High Schools, before beginning her teaching career overseas. She taught in London, England; Caracas, Venezuela; Subic Bay Naval Base, The Philippines; and Tehran, Iran. She returned to Pittsburgh in 1965, and began a career as a high school guidance counselor at North Hills High School. After retirement in 1988, she traveled to various places, and became active with her church, the former Mulberry Presbyterian Church of Wilkinsburg, and its senior center. She was a current member of The First Presbyterian Church of Edgewood. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, W. Neil Hand; her sister, Louise Hand; and her nephew, Alan Hand. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Elaine Hand of Millersburg, OH; her niece, Alison Blondheim of Massillon, OH; and her niece, Amy (Mike) Mast of Canton, OH. She is survived by her great-niece, Rachel Mast of Canton, OH. She was a great-aunt to Eric (Elizabeth) Blondheim of Lovelock, NV, and Kerri Blondheim of Akron, OH. She was a great-great-aunt to Ashley (Tyler) Long of Elko, NV, Emma and Eric Blondheim of Lovelock, NV; and a great-great-great-aunt to Ryker Long of Elko, NV. Special friends include Nina and Hy Robinson of Livermore, CA; and their daughters, Fiona and Mariah. Special goddaughters are Jaii Beckley of Chicago, IL and Tyenne Beckley of Toronto, Canada. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 19, 2015, beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Edgewood with the Rev. Michael Rucker officiating. Visitation will take place from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. prior to the service. A private burial service will be held in Restland Memorial Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Edgewood, 120 E. Swissvale Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15218. Funeral arrangements were conducted by the THOMAS L. NIED FUNERAL HOME.
