PAYNE GENE LOUIS, Jr. Died peacefully in Boston, Massachusetts, on Wednesday, December 30, 2015, at the age of 71. Gene is survived by his wife, Lora; his son, Jordan; his daughter, Johannah; his granddaughter, Olivia; his mother, Antoinette; and his siblings, Robert, James, and Kathleen; as well as many close friends. Gene was born on November 16, 1944, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of Gene Louis Payne, Sr. and Antoinette Sophie (O'Konski) Payne. He received his B.S. in Management Science from Carnegie Mellon University in 1968, and his MBA from The Harvard Business School in 1973. As a Captain in the Army Corps of Engineers, he served a year in Vietnam between 1970 and 1971, for which he received two Bronze Stars. In 1968, Gene married Lora Salsgiver. After Vietnam and Harvard University, they settled in Swampscott, Massachusetts to raise their family. During this time, Gene worked in a variety of business ventures as a founder, investor, and consultant before retiring in 2005. Fiercely dedicated to his friends and family, Gene will most fondly be remembered for the big-hearted love and unorthodox advice he freely offered up to everyone, but especially to his children and the young.
