WIEBE DONALD “DON” OF SEWICKLE...

WIEBE DONALD “DON” Of Sewickley passed away quietly Thursday, January 28, 2016, surrounded by his loving family at Heritage Valley Hospital, Sewickley, PA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry H. and Elizabeth Wiebe; and his siblings, Rosie Doerksen, Roland Wiebe, Matilda Suderman, John Wiebe, Alvin Wiebe, Elma Friesen, Hilda Lowen, and Mildred Ediger. Don was married for 57 years to the love of his life, Thora Merritt Wiebe, who passed away in 2002. In 2004, he met Audrey Lund at a tour of their future home, Masonic Village, Sewickley. They were married for ten happy years until her death in 2015. Don was born in Nebraska, he served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater during World War II as a commanding officer of embarked troops on two troop ships. His ships were involved in several notable WWII campaigns, including New Guinea, Leyte, and Iwo Jima. After the war, he also held command of troop trains in California bringing our boys home after the war. He graduated from West Virginia University, Morgantown, with a Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering, and Master's in Mechanical Engineering, and achieved ABD status for a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. He served as Assistant Professor of Engineering and in 1991 was elected to the Academy of Distinguished Alumni at WVU. He also served as Manager for Joy Manufacturing Co., in Saltsburg, PA, for nine years, and three years at the Astronuclear Lab at Westinghouse Electric Co., in Large, PA. He conducted research for 21 years at A. Stucki Co., Neville Island, retiring as Vice President of Research and Engineering. Elected Fellow of the American Society of Engineers in 1980, Don held 30 U.S. and 49 foreign patents. A passionate supporter of Pittsburgh sports teams, he was a Pittsburgh Pirates season ticket holder for many years. Don was raised a Mennonite, and was an ordained Elder of the Presbyterian Church, serving as Superintendent of Sunday Schools for ten years at the First Presbyterian Church of Greensburg. He was a member of The Presbyterian Church, Sewickley, for 38 years. Don was known by his family and friends for his generosity and compassion, his sense of humor, wisdom, and acceptance of all people, character traits that were expressions of his strong Christian faith. He will be deeply missed by his children, Charles Wiebe and his wife, Beverly, Rev. Dr. John Wiebe and his wife, Lucinda; his grandchildren, David, William and Dylan Wiebe; and his stepchildren, Jeff Lund, Leslie Chambers and her husband, Tom. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 13, 2016, at the Star Points Chapel of the Masonic Village, 1000 Masonic Drive, Sewickley, PA. Interment will be in Morgantown, WV, with military honors at a later date. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Greensburg, 300 S.
