GOLDEN SAMUEL HENRY III Age 95, passed away peacefully, on Wednesday, February 10, 2016. He is survived by his daughters, Patricia of New York City and Pamela (Bruce Kestner) of Shadyside; sister-in-law, Shirley Golden; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ethel Howard and Samuel Henry Golden II; beloved wife, Pagie Patricia Leftwich; son, Dr. Samuel W. Golden IV; brother, Robert; and sister, Ruth (Bob Cooley). Born February 17, 1920, Sam's life was filled with reading, classical music, duplicate bridge and travel and was rich with thought and discussion. Although Sam began his professional career as a pharmacist, he most valued his years as a teacher in the Pittsburgh Public Schools. Sam taught science, first at Herron Hill Junior High School (now Milliones), then at Westinghouse High School, where he headed the Science Department until his retirement in 1981. He took great joy in seeing his former students and hearing about their lives and successes. Sam was a Staff Sergeant in the Army from 1943 until 1946, and was in charge of a medical laboratory for Station Hospital in Burma. He also spent many years as a practicing pharmacist, retiring in 1980, from Thrift Drug Company. Sam was proud of the centuries-long legacy of the Golden family, which traces its American heritage back to the 1790s and the relationship between Sally Hemings and Thomas Jefferson. In the 19th century Sam's ancestor, Lewis F. Woodson, was a nationally known abolitionist and author who lived in Pittsburgh. The family also includes the first African-American member of the Pittsburgh stock exchange and the president of the Western Pennsylvania Historical Society. A celebration of Sam Golden's life will be held at Calvary Episcopal Church on Saturday, February 20, 2016, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Pittsburgh Promise, a nonprofit that provides financial aid to college-bound Pittsburgh Public School graduates, pittsburghpromise.org, 1901 Centre Ave., Suite 204, Pittsburgh, PA 15219. He will be missed greatly by family and friends. Arrangements by MCCABE BROS., INC. Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb
