NELLIE APOSTOLOS POLITIS Age 90, of McMurray, formally of Verona and Swissvale, fell asleep in the Lord on Wednesday, May 15, 2019. Nellie was preceded in death by her husband, Gust; daughter, Ann Maria Douris (Stanton); sister, Lottie; brother, Paul; and parents, Michael and Sophia. She is survived by her son, Manuel (Alexis); grandson, Constantine and granddaughters Kassianna, and Rania. Nellie earned a bachelor degree from the University of Pittsburgh and a Masters in Education from Duquesne University. Nellie taught English at Swissvale High School and later at Woodland Hills. Nellie was a talented writer and had a great love for the written word. She had a contagious smile and an inquisitive personality. Nellie's desire was to have her children and grandchildren stay close to the church and complete their education. Nellie had been a member of Dormition of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church in Oakmont and Holy Cross Church in Mt. Lebanon. Loving husband of 52 years to Judy (Moyer) DiGiacomo; beloved father of Jay (Kelly) and Jeffrey (Heather) DiGiacomo; special pappy of Victoria, Zachary, Bella, Dominic, Gianna, Tia, Nikoss and Franco; dear brother of Carmen DiGiacomo, Linda Metrovich, Cindy Baldridge, and the late Louis DiGiacomo; also survived by nieces and nephews. Art was a former employee of UPMC Medical Center for over 37 years, a former coach of CIT Baseball, TRSC Soccer, Carlynton Wrestling. Art was an avid golfer, fisherman, and Pittsburgh Sports Fan. PENNY NEWELL STEVENSON Penny Newell Stevenson departed us on May 8, 2019. She was born in Pittsburgh, and enjoyed her final years in North Carolina with her family in Winston-Salem. Penny never met a stranger, and embraced each new friendship with an open heart and open arms. Her keen sense of humor and quick wit made her a favorite among crowds. Penny loved the sunshine and spent countless hours in her garden in the company of her beloved Shelties. Penny was a 1954 graduate of West View in Pittsburgh, PA, and the founding member of the North Hill Babes. Penny's survivors include her three daughters, Kerry (Barry), Lisa (Harold), and Pam; her many grandchildren, John and Noah, Tom (Marina), Lindsay (Travis), Maddie, Tyson, Blakely, Cam, Matt (Heather), Carson, and Gracie, Andrew (Kaitlin), Nate (Mary Lynn), and Ally; and her brother George. ROBERT CHARLES LEISE Age 93, of Millcreek, and formerly of Carrick, PA, passed away at his home on Sunday, May 12, 2019. He was born in Pittsburgh on June 2, 1925; a son of the late Charles and Mary Leise. Robert attended Connelley Trade School in Pittsburgh and received honorable discharges from the Merchant Marines and Coast Guard during World War II. He also received an honorable discharge from the United States Army during the Korean War Conflict. Robert volunteered for 14 years as the caretaker for the Korean War era F-94 Starfire Jet, located along Interstate 90 in the veterans section of Erie County Memorial Gardens. He enjoyed all forms of aviation and was a history buff, especially the Civil War era. Robert was retired from the Ohio Barge Line Company. Robert is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lois Eleanor Leise; one daughter, Karen Leise; one son, Wayne Leise (Pam); two grandchildren, Lauren and Steven Leise; one great-granddaughter, Luna Leise; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty and Helen; and one brother, Richard. At Robert's request, private arrangements are being handled by the RUSSELL C. JANICE RAWSON Age 82, of Monroeville, passed away at home with her family at her side on Saturday, May 18, 2019. Beloved wife of the late Frank Rawson; loving mother of Michael Marmo and Randy (Jennifer Harris) Marmo; cherished grandmother of Michael (Angel) Marmo, Brittany Benson, Brandon Marmo, Jenna Marmo, Lynnemarie (Michael) Greco; and great-grandmother of Penelope, Gianna, Jack, and Dominic; sister of Bonnie VanMeter; aunt of Lee VanMeter and Kimberly Webber; also survived by several cousins. Jan worked in the crime lab of the Office of the Medical Examiner for 25 years. RICHARD DIX, SR. THE MAYOR OF ELLIOTT Of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has passed away from natural causes at the age 67, with family by his side, on Monday, May 13, at 4:40 p.m. Richard was an automobile mechanic for 25 plus years. In the 90's, he ran and operated a gas station called Citgo in the heart of West End across the street from Mondae's Auto Supply in Pittsburgh. He also had a demolition business, a home remodeling business and landscaping business. Every Mother's Day, he would go to the Rogers Ohio Auction to get flowers and bring them back to his community for the people. He was a man that had a drive to work that could not be stopped. Richard was a city man but a country man at heart, who loved to get out of the city and in the woods any time he could. He loved to raise horses, chickens, pigs, and goats. Richard was the son of the late Elizabeth Derobio and Joseph Dix; brother of three to Donna Taylor, Debbie Schaffer and Bob Derobio; husband of late Deborah Dix; father of four to Richard, Jr., Kimberly, Dustin and Mason; grandfather of fourteen. He also was a father and grandfather to so many more that didn't have one of their own. He was a man who took many under his wing and showed them love and a way in life when everyone else gave up on them, and for that alone he will be never forgotten and truly missed. JACQUELINE L. "JACKIE" WARNOCK Age 90, of Monroeville, went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, May 15, 2019. Beloved daughter of the late Virginia Eibel and the late “adoptive” parents, Fred and Mildred Hoffman. Most loved mother of Mike (Adele), Bill (Tina), Paul (Debbie), Fred and Ginny (Kent) Warnock. She was predeceased by her son, John. Jackie is also survived by ten grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; as well as her best dog buddy, Chloe. Jackie was a 1946 graduate of the Sacred Heart High School. In addition to raising her children, Jackie worked all her life outside the home. She worked from 1961-1992 at The University of Pittsburgh as a Senior Administrative Secretary for the Assistant Director of Libraries. She was a volunteer at Saint Bernadette's church in the front office from 1990-2012. She also volunteered for the organization PALS. She loved spending time on her back porch, and hanging out with her dog. She was a strong woman, in her spirit, her character, and very much in her faith. She loved her family always, without reservation or judgement. Her children and all of her grandchildren were the most important thing in her world. She was the greatest gift God ever gave to her children. She always saw the good in people, and many whose lives she touched felt she was like a second mom to them. She was loyal, kind, and generous (in all ways). She died, as she had lived, loved by her family and at peace with a life well-lived. JOHN BRIAN JONES Age 62, of Mount Lebanon, after a courageous battle with cancer, on Wednesday, April 3, 2019. Beloved and devoted husband for 35 years of Karen A. (Parker) Jones; loving and cherished father of Brian and Libby; son of the late Donald and Ruth (Davis) Jones; brother of Robert (Beth) Jones; uncle of Hillary and Daniel; brother-in-law of Michael Parker, Donald (Jen) Long, Dale (Cindy) Long, and Dan Long (Julie Donnelly); uncle of Sean, Shannon, Adam, Alexa, Casey, Jackson, Oliver, and Avery. John grew up in Mount Lebanon, graduating in 1975. He went on to study Journalism at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He spent the majority of his career as an executive at Xerox Corporation in both Pittsburgh and Rochester, NY. His lifelong passion for photography turned into a second career when he opened JB Jones Photography. John enjoyed golfing, traveling, cooking, skiing and was also active in local politics. JOHN VICTOR HISSOM Born October 1, 1962 in East Liverpool, Ohio to Velma Hissom and the late Lester V. Hissom. He passed away on May 17, 2019 in Pittsburgh, PA following a lengthy illness. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Maureen (Squires); son, Daniel of East Liverpool; brother, David (Becky) of Mobile, AL; sister, Susan (Jeff) Barr of Massillon, OH; four step-daughters; and six grandchildren. John graduated from East Liverpool High School in 1981 and entered service in the United States Marine Corps that same year. After seven years of service, he returned to East Liverpool and worked for the former Weirton Steel Corp, and also continued his military service with the Ohio Army National Guard, which led to his service in Operation Desert Storm. John held an Associate's Degree from CCBC and a Bachelor's in Manufacturing Management from the University of Minnesota. He held positions with several other companies in the greater Pittsburgh area most recently serving as a Quality Engineer for Progeny Systems Corp. John earned the Eagle Scout Award while a member of Troop 12, Boy Scouts of America. His time in scouting along with time spent outdoors with his family fueled his enjoyment of camping and hiking along with other hobbies. He is a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Bethel Park following a nearly 20-year membership at First Baptist Church in Chester, WV. John had a heart for servicing others and showed this through his volunteer work in disaster relief through both the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief organization and also United Methodist Commission on Relief (UMCOR). Friends will be received on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at PAUL HENNEY CREMATION & FUNERAL TRIBUTES, 5570 Library Rd., Bethel Park. DENISE P. THOMAS Age 61, of Conneaut Lake, died at home, Wednesday, May 15, 2019. She was born January 12, 1958 in Rochester, PA; a daughter of Dennis and Mary Ann Stack Cronin. She married Dr. Walter M. Thomas on May 5, 1983, he survives. She was a graduate of Quigley High School in Baden, PA and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Carlow University in Pittsburgh. She worked at Montefiore Hospital in Pittsburgh for several years, first on a floor, then as a charge nurse, and then in oncology nursing. After she and her family moved to Conneaut Lake, she continued in oncology nursing in Meadville with Dr. Joanne Dragun. In 2004, she and her husband purchased and operate the Just Sleep Motel in Conneaut Lake. She was an avid reader, enjoyed cooking and always enjoyed family and friends gathering at her house. She also enjoyed traveling to the Outer Banks especially during the off-season when it was quieter. She had a passionate love for her children and grandson and loved the family times together. In addition to her husband Walter of 36 years, she is survived by her three children, Kevin P. Thomas (Korrin) of Conneaut Lake, Meghan Thomas of Glasgow, Scotland and Ryan C. Thomas of Conneaut Lake; a grandson, Kevin Thomas, Jr.; her mother, Mary Ann Cronin of Moon Twp.; two sisters, Kathy Smith (Tim) of Monaca and Becky Devey (Jim) of Moon Twp.; three brothers, Tim Cronin (Debbie) of Aurora, OH, David Cronin (Patty) of Leesburg, VA and Danny Cronin (Michelle) of Monaca and several nieces and nephews. VICTOR J. FIRTH Age 89, of Scott Twp., passed away on Thursday, May 16, with the love of his life, and wife of 61 years, by his side. Vic was born March 20, 1930, the son of the late Katherine Nelly Firth and James E. M. Firth, and was raised in Carnegie, PA. He was a graduate of Shady Side Academy and the University of Pittsburgh, where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Vic was a devoted husband to his loving wife, Martha [Martie] Austin Firth, a wonderful father to his children, Douglas M. Firth [Pam] of Moon Township, Laurel Firth Shannon [Jeff] of Crawford, TX; and was preceded in death by his sister, Jane Firth Ayton. Vic was also so happy to be the uncle of Melinda Boyce, Jim Ayton, Pam Johnson, and Pat Mitchell. The brightest stars in his universe were his six grandchildren, who brought him great pride and joy. Ryan, Connor, Darcie, and Hayley Firth and Lyn and Amie Shannon loved, and will miss their Grandpa very much. Professionally, Vic had a very successful sales management career with Geigy Pharmaceuticals, a division of Ciba-Geigy, and the Pittsburgh sales district regularly ranked #1 in the USA under his leadership. After his retirement, he and Martie enjoyed a life of travel, fun, family, and friends. Their travels took them around the world and they truly enjoyed the long lasting relationships they formed with special friends in Australia. Vic and Martie belonged to Chartiers Country Club for 35 years and this became the hub of their social life. At Chartiers, he loved the live music and annual Halloween costume contests [which they won the past six years!]. He will be remembered as a funny, kind, loyal, and loving gentleman. His wife, children, and grandchildren looked to him as the wise patriarch of the family and he will be deeply missed by the many people who loved him. GEORGE T. DOBRINICK Age 75, of Palm Springs, CA, formerly of Pittsburgh, passed away on Friday, May 10, 2019. George was a graduate of Jeannette High School, Duquesne University, and was a retired Social Studies and Civics teacher with the Carlynton School District. George enjoyed his retirement in the desert for the last 15 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, John M. and Dorothy (Ciganovic) Dobrinick; and his brother, John M. Dobrinick, Jr. George is survived by his niece, Lynn M. Cass (Jim); nephew Thomas J. JOHN R. O'MAHONEY Age 75, of Mt. Washington, passed away on Friday, May 17, 2019. Beloved husband of Carol (Ratay) O'Mahoney; loving father of Kelley O'Mahoney; beloved son of the late Paul, Sr. and Elizabeth (Fielding) O'Mahoney; loving brother of Paul O'Mahony, Mark (Betty) O'Mahoney, Maureen (the late Jim) Seebacher, Joan O'Mahony, and the late Terry (surviving spouse, Diana) O'Mahoney, Timothy (surviving spouse, Maryellen) O'Mahoney, Nancy King, Phillip O'Mahoney, and Lynn O'Mahoney; also survived by many nieces, nephews, and his beloved dog, Benni. John loved to paint flowers, ride bikes with his daughter, Kelley, and feed the squirrels. He served in the US Marine Corps and was a huge Steelers fan.
