DAVID MILTON RODERICK Mr. David Milton Roderick, Age 95, died on Saturday, October 5, 2019, at home in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. As a child and young man in the predominantly blue-collar North Side Pittsburgh neighborhood, Mr. Roderick earned money as a caddy, paper boy, magazine salesman, and retail clerk, while also excelling in football, boxing, baseball, and golf. While an employee with Gulf Oil, he joined the U.S. Marines at 17 in 1942, and served as a platoon sergeant in the Pacific until 1945. Upon returning stateside, he rejoined Gulf Oil and attended Robert Morris College at night, earning a degree in accounting and law. He also gained a B.S. degree in economics and finance from the University of Pittsburgh. In 1953, Roderick became assistant comptroller of the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad Company and the Union Railroad Company. In 1959, he joined U.S. Steel Corporation, and from 1964 to his retirement from U.S. Steel (USX) in 1989, held positions of Vice-President Accounting International, Vice-President international, Chairman of the Finance Committee, Board director, Chairman of the Board, and CEO. Under Roderick's leadership, U. S. Steel was reshaped and transformed from primarily a steel company into a major energy company: facilities were upgraded, efficiency was improved, and in a diversifying merger with Marathon Oil Company, U.S. Steel became USX Corporation. During his tenure at USX, Mr. Roderick worked closely with Presidents Carter, Reagan, and Bush to make the steel industry stronger. He served as co-founder and Chairman Emeritus of the U.S.-Korea Business Council, and chairman of the International Environmental Bureau. He was appointed to the President's Commission on Executive Exchange, and the Advisory Committee for Trade Negotiations. Thanks to his international positions, he and his family lived in Paris, London, and Rome, and traveled extensively on several continents. Committed to good corporate citizenship, during those years Mr. Roderick was a member of the American Iron and Steel Institute and the International Iron Institute. He served as chairman of the National Alliance of Business, and was a member of both the Business Roundtable and the prestigious Business Council, an organization dedicated to the business community's contributions to the American people. Roderick was also a member and past chairman of the American Iron and Steel Institute and the International Iron and Steel Institute, which awarded him the prestigious Gary Medal in 1984 for his service to the industry. Along with his corporate achievements, Roderick was also very active in civic arenas, including medicine, education, sports, the environment, and the Boy Scouts. At home in Pittsburgh, Mr. Roderick was chairman or director of The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Carnegie Mellon University Board of Trustees, and the Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Club, for which he chaired the committee charged with selecting the location of PNC park. He served as president of the United Way of Allegheny County, was involved with the Boy Scouts of America, and established a scholarship program for young engineering students. In 1991, The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy established the David M. Roderick Reserve on the Lake Erie shoreline to honor Mr. Roderick's conservation advocacy. An avid outdoorsman, hunter, and sports enthusiast, Mr. Roderick also worked with Arnold Palmer in founding the Winne Palmer Nature Reserve at St. Vincent College to honor the renowned golfer's wife. In 2006, the American Ireland Fund gave Mr. Roderick its Distinguished Leadership Award for his exceptional work in community and charitable events. ELIZABETH J. "BETTY JANE" HUFFMAN Age 73, of Nottingham Township, passed away at home on October 5, 2019, as a result of complications from a fall on July 21. Born on February 6, 1946 in Daisytown, to George and Helen Krilosky, she was married to Henry A. Huffman for 52 years. She is survived by their sons, Jason (Karena) and Nathan; brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Joyce Huffman; nieces, Kathy Lutes, Laura Bell, Jonetta Santos, Lori Shahan, and Betty Joyce Lowenhaupt; and nephews, Danny Krilosky and Rob Huffman. Deceased in addition to her parents are her sister, Marlene Lutes (John); sister-in-law, Betty Nash Huffman; beloved Aunt, Margaret and Uncle, Steve Settie. A 1963 graduate of California Area High School, she worked at Penney's regional office in Castle Shannon before being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1968. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in McMurray for more than 30 years where she assisted with the children's choir. She was a past President of the Borland Manor Elementary PTA in the Canon McMillan School District. In the late 1990's with the late Debby Gilbert, she started a Friday morning women's Bible study group that continues. The day before passing, her sisters in Christ met around her bed to sing, pray and bless her on her way. For the last ten years she has served as a volunteer chaplain at the Allegheny County Jail, climbing into her scooter on Saturdays to visit the women of her assigned pod. She was blessed to have relapsing-remitting MS for almost 35 years which permitted her during her mostly good days to pursue interests liking birding, writing poetry, fishing, riding horses along the beaches of Jamaica, dancing to “oldies” going to bargain matinees, visiting her Hungarian grandparents' village and finding a second cousin, and dining out with family and friends. A favorite pastime was putting the top down on their Miata and exploring back roads in pursuit of new places to buy a strawberry sundae. Whatever the day presented, her top earthly priority was her family. As her family's executive producer, she made it possible for her husband to carry out his responsibilities as an educator without any worry for the daily functioning of the family. And, she did it with unconditional love. Friends will be received Thursday, October 10, 2019 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. in the JOHN B. GREENLEE FUNERAL HOME, LTD., 2830 Main St. Beallsville, PA 15313 where a brief prayer service will be held at 9 p.m. Thursday. Interment will be private. A memorial service will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, 530 Center Church Rd., McMurray, PA 15317 on Saturday, October 12 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Erwin Kerr officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Foundation of HOPE, 950 Second Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15219; Trinity United Methodist Church; or the Pittsburgh Chapter of the MS Society, 1501 Reedsdale St., Suite 105 Pittsburgh, PA 15233.
