MARCIA LEVY POMERANTZ Passed away on Monday, December 2, 2019, at the age of 101. Marcie was born on September 7, 1918, in Pittsburgh to Nathan and Fanny (Miller) Levy. She was predeceased by her siblings, Sylvan, Leonard, Selma, Ruth, Joe, Jay, Jean and Betty. She is the widow of Harold L. Pomerantz and the mother of the late Richard Martin Pomerantz, Rabbi Fredric (Sandy) Pomerantz, Debbie (Ken) Cook, and Sylvan (Honni) Pomerantz. Marcie's family circle includes her eight grandchildren, the late Jeremy Pomerantz, Josh (Marta) Pomerantz, Rabbi Rebecca (Larry) Shinder, Brent Cook, Rachel Cook, Benjamin (Erica) Pomerantz, Emily (Sean) Altman, Sam (Mary) Pomerantz and eight great-grandchildren, Jeremy, Jacob, and Hannah Shinder, Addie and Camilla Pomerantz, Henry and Ari Pomerantz and Mikayla Altman. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was confirmed at Rodef Shalom Congregation in 1934, and a graduate of Schenley High School. Marcia served as the Admissions Secretary, Secretary to the Dean and Head of Student Services at the Dental School at the University of Pittsburgh until the age of 70. After retiring, she volunteered for over 20 years at Shadyside Hospital and other organizations. CHARLES EDWARD DUNLEA Charles Edward Dunlea was born to Elizabeth Murray and Edward Dunlea of Pittsburgh at 4:45 a.m. at West Penn Hospital on December 1, 2019. Charlie was a tenacious little boy who beat the odds to be born alive and grace his parents with 90 minutes of life, spent peacefully in their loving arms. In addition to his parents, Charlie is survived by his big brother, Ambrose Dunlea. He is also survived by his grandfather, Ambrose Murray of Pittsburgh; his grandparents, Cheryl and William Dunlea of Medfield, MA; his aunt and uncle, Catherine Murray and Adam Agalloco of Philadelphia; and his uncle, aunt, and cousins, Steven, Kathleen, Emily, and Tyler Dunlea of Attleboro, MA. He was welcomed into heaven by his grandmother, Maureen Murray. Charlie will always be his parents' cherished son. His life was a blessing, and he taught us about hope, courage, and love for the most vulnerable among us. He was born on March 7, 1946, the son of Ruth Bogardus Edwards of Hazelwood and the late James Leroy Edwards, Sr. Mr. Edwards was a skilled mechanic, an accomplished auto executive and independent consultant that also worked for American Shear Knife Corp early in his career. For a few years, he was also a NASCAR Crew Chief for a local race team. He enjoyed golfing, working on cars, boating and watching the Steelers win on Sundays as well as enjoying NASCAR racing events. Surviving, in addition to his mother, is his wife of 55 years, Cathryne George Edwards; his four sons, Colonel Scott Douglas Edwards, USAF and wife, Carol, stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base in LA, Sean R. THOMAS EDISON STEWART Thomas Edison Stewart passed away on the morning of November 25th, 2019 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at the age of 87. Thomas was born on February 1, 1932, in Birmingham, Pennsylvania, and spent his childhood within Huntingdon County. He graduated from Franklin Township High School. He then spent the majority of his life living in the village of Clinton outside of Freeport, Pennsylvania, alongside the Allegheny River. Thomas was a United States Air Force veteran who served during the Korean War era, eventually reaching the rank of Senior Airman before being honorably discharged with a service-related injury. After his military service, Thomas attended trade school and worked as an industrial engineer in the Western Pennsylvania area, working for companies such as Alcoa, Pittsburgh Forgings, Pittsburgh Nipple Works, Papercraft, General Tire, and General Electric. Thomas was a polymath and homesteader. From a young age, he lived a life of self-sufficiency. In high school, he earned money by trapping foxes who had a governmental bounty. Later in life, he ran his own small business called Stewart Engineering where he would exercise his talent in fiberglass molding and automobile part fabrication. In his spare time, Thomas was a skilled motorcycle racer and enjoyed gardening. He was an experimental aircraft enthusiast and was actively working on designing and building his own airplane until his age caught up to him, prompting him to spend the last years of his life in a Greensburg retirement community. In his final season of life, he enjoyed spending a lot of time with his sons, sipping on an occasional malt liquor, and relaxing. Thomas is survived by his children, Phillip, Thomas, Jr., and Beverly; siblings, Jim and his wife, Dorothy, Nancy; his grandchildren, Gannon, Sabrina, Alaina, Ella, Alexander, and Claire; and his brother-in-law, Harry. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Charles Stewart and Maria Agnes Kathrine; siblings, Harry Stewart, Bart (Sam) Stewart, and Ricky Stewart Sharrot; and numerous adopted dogs who he loved. Thomas died peacefully of natural causes while under the care of caring nurses and family members. The family has concluded private funeral services. However, the family will be hosting a memorial service at The Clement in Tarentum in the early summer where all are welcome to attend and celebrate Thomas' life. CHARLES A. "CHUCK" BRENNAN Of Crystal Lake. Chuck was born May 25, 1944, in Braddock, PA to Charles and Irene Brennan. He passed away peacefully November 14, 2019 in Cary. Chuck was born and raised in Braddock, PA. After graduating, he joined the U.S. Army, serving in Germany. He moved to IL in 1973 with his wife and has called IL home since then. Chuck was an avid sportsman; loved hunting and musky fishing in his beloved Northwoods of WI. He played rugby for over 25 years with the Pittsburgh Club and the Chicago Griffins (fondly known as The General), having every inch of his body either stitched, plastered or bruised - but loving every minute of it. He gave freely of his time and energy as a transport volunteer at Centegra McHenry Hospital, spreading joy as Santa each year to friends and neighbors, bringing Holy Communion to patients in the local hospital for St. Thomas the Apostle Church. His quick wit and crazy humor and subtle (or not) one-liners were legendary, always coaxing a smile or a laugh from those lucky enough to be in his presence. His kindness, generosity and caring nature will be forever remembered by those who were fortunate to be a part of his life well lived." Esther was born in Pittsburgh on June 19, 1930, to Ethel and Meyer Laufe. Esther married Erwin Illson and they raised two sons. Esther graduated from the University of Pittsburgh, taught nursery school and subsequently went on to sell real estate, which was one of her life's passions. To Esther, selling real estate was not just a job, it was a core part of her life, and it enabled her to expand her broad and diverse circle of lifelong friends. Esther also loved the arts and music, and maintained an interest in areas as diverse as Broadway show tunes and the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild. WILLIAM A. SPRAGUE Age 83, of Hampton, on Dec. 2, 2019. Beloved husband for 24 years of Sharon A. Marshall. Father of Alyssa Sprague, Alyson Sprague, Karin (Richard) Simpson, Jessica (Jess Grainger) Mitchell and John Carlton (Alison) Mitchell; dear grandfather of Adrienne and Caitlin Hough, Sprague Carrillo, Melina Kriznik, Megan and Nevada Simpson, George, Charlotte and Jack Mitchell, and Eleanor Granger; brother of the late George Sprague. Friends received Friday 2-4 and 6-8 and Saturday 12-2 at SCHELLHAAS FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, 5864 Heckert Rd., Bakerstown, where services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. William earned his B.S. in Civil Engineering from Carnegie Tech, was a career long licensed Professional Engineer (PE), and a member of ASME, American Society of Military Engineers. He mostly worked in business development for various regional public engineering works and as a side passion, designed over 100 custom homes throughout Pittsburgh. He was a member and past president of the board of Unitarian Universalist Church of North Hills, loved art, cooking, his dogs, and being around friends and family. Bill loved jazz, played upright Bass with the Bill Sprague Combo for many years, and was a longtime member and board member of Manchester Craftsmen's Guild.
