She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Akerley; and her brother, Harold Rosenblatt. MECHEM GEORGE WILLIAM BILL Age 92 of the North Side of Pittsburgh. Died Friday, September 2, 2017, at his son's home in Grand Blanc Michigan, surrounded by loved ones. He was born on March 18, 1925 in Brownsville, PA, the son of Charles and Melvina (Austin) Mechem. On July 31, 1944, he married Mary Agnes Stevenson. They celebrated almost 62 years of love until her death in 2006. He was a member of the West Allegheny Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses, and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved to read, sing, and shared his home with many. He will be missed by his four children, Roberta (Chuck) Hart, Peggy (Larry) Doyle, Barbara (Robert) Downs, David (Tina) Mechem; and his ten grandchildren, Bill (Pam) Eshenbaugh, Amy Creese, Tammy (Jerry) Kennedy, Karen (Charles) Warrick, Marina Doyle, Dylan Doyle, Josh Watson, Kaylee Downs, Andrew Mechem, and Chloe (Chase) Dettloff; also nine great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, Bill was preceded in death by his brother, James and sister, Margaret. BURTON WILLIAM J. Passed away peacefully at his home in Cleveland, Tennessee, surrounded by family on September 2, 2017. Born in Glassport, Pennsylvania on August 16, 1927, he was the eldest son of Chester William Burton and Isabel Marie Dunst Burton. Mr. Burton is survived by his wife of 63 years, Helen Louise Conner Burton; daughter, Mary Kathleen Burton; son, Michael Francis Burton (Fredda); son, Matthew William Burton (Bonnie); nine grandchildren; sister, Betty Smith; and brother, Robert Burton. He studied engineering at Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, and served with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1948 to 1951. Mr. Burton worked for the Hill York Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Company for 28 years, retiring as vice president of operations. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. There will be a Memorial Service at St. Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church, Cleveland, on Thursday, September 14, 2017, at 7 p.m., followed by a reception with light refreshments. WOJCIAK PAUL Paul Wojciak, age 69, passed away peacefully August 31, 2017, in Loveland, CO. He was born April 25, 1948, on Polish Hill in Pittsburgh, PA to Frank and Jane (Dombrowski) Wojciak. Paul graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a degree in Engineering and a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He married Rebecca Ann (Sistik) Wojciak on September 3, 1978, and together, they had two children, James and Chris. Paul spent his career caring for and protecting the environment as the proprietor of Environmental Management & Associates in Wexford, PA. After his wife, Rebecca, passed away in 2002, Paul continued to enjoy life in his hometown of Pittsburgh. He later remarried to Pamalyn Allen on October 11, 2008, and they began a new chapter in life together in Fort Collins, Colorado where he enjoyed skiing, hiking and all things outdoors. Paul lived life to the fullest, enjoying travel all over the US and cruises to Europe, the Caribbean and Mexico. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather - and one hell of a Steelers fan. Paul is survived by his wife, Pamalyn Allen; sons, James (Katie) and son, Chris (April) Wojciak of Arvada, CO; brother, John Wojciak; and grandchildren, Rebecca Ann and Maxwell. Paul was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph; parents, Frank and Jane, and wife Rebecca. SACKIN CLAIRE October 1, 1925 June 24, 2017. Claire Sackin of Mt. Lebanon passed away peacefully at the age 91. She was born in New York City and was the oldest of three children. She was a school teacher earlier in her career, but took time off to raise her family in Pittsburgh. At age 40 she went back to school to earn her Master's degree and PhD in Social Work at the University of Pittsburgh, specializing in treatment for addiction and substance abuse. She was an esteemed professor and department head at St. Francis College from 1976 to 1997, and afterwards as professor emerita. She was passionate about the ballet, symphony, opera and theater, but especially art, and her favorite painter was Picasso. She was an avid traveler, including visits to Paris, London, China, Russia and Cuba, but her favorite spot was Aruba. Rita lived her life to the fullest, enjoying her family, entertaining friends, cooking, traveling, and reading. Rita had a fulfilling career, beginning in nursing and psychology, continuing as a nursing professor at Duquesne University & CCAC and working the last 20 years as a Nurse Practitioner in Woman's Health, mostly for Lifestages at Allegheny General Hospital. She volunteered extensively, was a featured speaker at many professional events, participated on numerous boards, and was the consummate professional, respected and admired by her colleagues, patients, and students. PURVIS MARY JO Age 82, of Sewickley, died August 16, 2017 after a long illness. Born June 11, 1935 in Iowa City, Iowa, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 57 years Robert L. Purvis (Bob); her parents, Clair and Dorothy Ingalls; and her brother, Jerry Ingalls MD. She was the mother of Deanna Purvis (Trish Lane) of Pittsburgh, Douglas Purvis (Diane) of Richmond, VA; and adoring grandmother of Hollyann Purvis also of Richmond. Mary Jo graduated from Duke University with a B.S. degree in Nursing. In 1957, she moved to what was then the territory of Hawaii where she worked in nursing, met and married Bob. She put her nursing career on hold to devote full time to being a wonderful wife and mother. Her favorite hobby was tennis, a sport that she excelled at for over 50 years and through which she developed lifelong friendships. She was also an avid fan of Pirates Baseball, enjoying her yearly trips with Bob for spring training. SWANEY GWEN CHENOWETH A Renaissance woman, Gwen Chenoweth Swaney, 87, was an avid antique collector and outstanding high school French and English teacher. She passed away suddenly at her home Monday, September 11, 2017. A 1947 honor graduate of the Winchester Thurston School, she enjoyed singing, playing tennis, gardening and frequenting the many antique shops in the Pittsburgh area where her passion involved collecting antique dolls, Meissen porcelain and Scalp Level paintings, among other collectibles. She majored in French and English at the University of Pittsburgh where she met her late husband, Lester L. Swaney, a decorated World War II U.S. Marine aviator and founder of the University of Pittsburgh Ski Club. In more than two decades of teaching, Gwen Swaney taught French and English at East Washington High School where her students dedicated the 1962 yearbook to their beloved teacher. She also taught French at Winchester Thurston before moving to head the Gifted Program at Churchill Area High School which later evolved into the Woodland Hills School District. She also tutored students with critical long-term illnesses at their homes. She had been a member of the 20th Century Club, the University Club and the PAA. She authored a book about antique dolls using haiku to describe her massive collection. She was also an excellent chess player beating some opponents in less than five moves. And with her highly trained soprano singing voice, she was a frequent soloist at the West Alexander Presbyterian Church and many Republican Party fundraisers. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester L. Swaney; and her parents, Rosten and Blanche Holmes Chenoweth. She is survived by a daughter, Christine Spring Swaney, of Pittsburgh and a son, Timothy C. Swaney (Dina Kay), of Maryland. WOJCIK JASON CHRISTOPHER Age 41, passed on his Birthday, Aug. 26, 1976. Graduate of Seneca Valley H. S. where he started his military career in JR. ROTC, following school, he enlisted in the United States Army. During his dedicated years of service, his assignments were at many military facilities and included three deployments in Iraq and a deployment in Korea. His numerous awards, medals, and commendations showed his proof of Valor; his military career was in the Military Intelligence, instructor of UAV operations. Jason had numerous hobbies, fishing, woodworking, computer programing, and finding ways to make or improve things from everyday life to complicated electronic equipment. He continuously impressed with his ingenuity. Jason was devoted to the military and his family; however, the light of his life was his daughter, Jayden. His fulfillment of his true happiness was always with his little girl. His bond with her was so pure and strong that even in death it can never be broken. HAHN MELANIE A. (BARAN) Age 85, of Paramount Sr. Living in Bethel Park, former lifelong resident of Penn Hills, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, September 10, 2017. Raised in Beaver Meadows, PA, Melanie was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church, and graduated from Hazleton High School. She completed her degree in Home Economics and Specialized in Early Childhood Development at The Pennsylvania State University, where her brother Carl introduced her to Joseph Hahn. They married in 1954, residing at Ft. Campbell, KY, before moving to Penn Hills, where they were active supporters of Penn Hills School District and charter members of Highlands Aqua Club. For many years, Melanie devoted her musical talents as an organist to St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, the family's parish. A Penn State devotee, Mel sent all four children there and created many happy memories for them, hosting Saturday's tailgates at Happy Valley. Moving to Paramount Sr. Living in 2011, Mel enjoyed weekly craft projects, bingo, prayer sessions, Rosaries, and Happy Hours.
