TUMBAS JOAN F. Of Mt. Lebanon, formerly of Alexandria, VA, died peacefully October, 12, 2018 after a journey with ovarian cancer that was diagnosed on December 18, 2013. Her challenges with cancer began when her surgeon, Joseph L. Kelley, MD, operated on her January 6, 2014. Dr. Kelley, a gynecologic oncology specialist from Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC, formed an instant connection with similar knowledge of the Jersey shore. Joan's family is grateful for all the compassionate and caring staff from each of the UPMC medical facilities who treated and comforted her. Joan is especially fond of those individuals on 5800 at Magee-Womens Hospital. Joan grew up in northern New Jersey surrounded by strong family traditions and childhood friends that will never be forgotten. She spent her summers at the shore and loved the smell of the salt air. Joan received a degree in education from Wheeling College and taught elementary education in the Alexandria City Public Schools. She had wonderful and meaningful friendships with so many teachers. Joan left the classroom after the birth of her second child, and in 1993 moved permanently to Pennsylvania to be with her husband. who worked with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The family remained in Mt. Lebanon after her husband took the position as head athletic trainer with the Chicago Cubs in 1986. Joan's second career as a real estate agent for the Howard Hanna - Mt. Lebanon Office began in February 2001. Being an agent fit right into Joan's love for meeting new people, home furnishings and decorating. She had the best of times with the Hanna Girls. Joan is survived by her husband of over 30 years, David G. Tumbas; and her two children, Peter of Pittsburgh, and Caroline and husband, Burke Edwards, of Greensboro, NC; also surviving are brother, Peter J. Frederiksen of Brielle, NJ and Stuart, FL; brotherin-law, Peter G. Tumbas and wife, Kim, and their daughters, Sara, Emma, and Eliza of Valparaiso, IN; as well as her many cousins, nieces, and nephews whom she dearly loved. BORISH MONA LaDENE Age 82, of New Kensington, formerly of Plum Borough, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 11, 2018 in Allegheny General Hospital, due to complications caused by a stroke. Mrs. Borish was born on September 29, 1936 in New Kensington, Pennsylvania, the eldest daughter of the late James and Grace Flynn Gilmore. On October 13, 1954, she married Henry J. Borish, who died on March 2, 2012. She was a graduate of Plum High School in 1954 and a homemaker who held her family very dear. She especially loved spending time with her four grandchildren and two great-granddaughters, attending their activities and celebrating holidays and birthdays with them. She was an avid reader and fan of true crime stories. She was also a member of St. Januarius Church, Circolo Febo of Renton, and previously ACME Club and Eagles in New Kensington. LaDene is survived by sons, Richard Borish of New Kensington and Gerry (Laura) Borish of Strabane; three grandsons, Henry J. PASTIERIK ARTHUR "BUBBY" Age 75, of Springdale, passed away peacefully Thursday, October 11, 2018 in the Veteran's Administration Hospital, Aspinwall, surrounded by his family. Bubby grew up in Springdale and was the son of the late Paul and Helen Pongratz Pastierik; father of Tammy (David) DiCio of Peters Twp., Tina (Eric) Fluent of Plum, and Tracey Radovich of Springdale; loving grandfather to Chelsie (Ryan Donaldson), David, Jr, Nicholas, Dominic, Brandon and Logan; greatgrandpa to Aubrey Donaldson; dear brother of James and Pat Pastierik, Paul and Kathy Pastierik, his best friend and twin sister Helen Sobotka; as well as many nieces and nephews; besides Art's parents, he was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 30 years, Mary Grace Pastierik; and brother-in-law, David Sobotka. Bubby was a member of St. Alphonsus Church in Springdale and was a U.S. Navy Veteran; he served in the Navy from 1963-1967 as a communications specialist and spent a year in Iceland and three years in Spain. He was a member of the Krivan Club for many years and worked for Haskells for 35 years as a shipper, where he eventually retired. After retirement, he enjoyed going to the River's Casino to try his luck. Bubby always made time to watch his grandkids play softball, never missing a game, and liked to "wet his line" and go fishing with the kids as well. The family would like to thank the hospice faculty at the VA Hospital in Aspinwall for taking such good care of their loved one and to St. Mary's Courtyard (Terri and Rodney) for their great friendship they had with Artie. KURPIEWSKI MARGARET C. "MIDGE" On Friday, October 12, 2018. Wife of the late Charles Kurpiewski of 38 years; best friend of Henry "Pops" Witkowski and his children, Barbara Reed and Philip Witkowski; sister-in-law of the late Francis DiLucente, Ann Kurpiewski, the late Teddy Kurpecky, John Kurpiewski, Anthony Kurpiewski and the late Mary Papanik; loving friend of Cecilia Edder and Mary Lou Payne; also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was born and raised in North Braddock and then moved to Braddock, where she graduated high school in 1944. While in high school, she worked for the J.C. Penny Co. in Braddock. She worked for Mr. Michael L. Benedum, "The Oil Wildcatter," who owned several oil companies, and also for Plymouth Oil Co. for approximately 15 years. In 1961, she and her best friend, Mrs. Bert Jaros, opened their own business, Triangle Personnel Office, in the city of Pittsburgh, which they eventually sold after 15 years. They prided themselves in placing many unemployed people into positions of employment. Their whole life was spent finding jobs for the unemployed. Midge went to work for Allegheny County as a job developer in the Braddock office, with the goal to find employment for those in need. In 1989, she retired after 14 years of work. Midge was involved in the Republican Party of West Mifflin and Allegheny County for many years. She was elected Vice Chairman of West Mifflin and held that office for many years. In 1968, she was elected as a full delegate along with Mrs. Elise Hillman. Together, the two were the first women to ever serve this position in the State of Pennsylvania. Her life revolved around people and as she always said, "what would we do without friends?" Midge always worked with and for people. She always loved being involved with people either in employment "jobs," politics or class reunions. Friends welcome Tuesday, from 3 to 7 p.m. at PATRICK T. LANIGAN FUNERAL HOME, INC., 700 Linden Ave. at Cable, East Pittsburgh, PA 15112, 412-824-8800. Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Braddock Hills.
