RICHARD P. UNDERWOOD, SR. Age 73, of Greensburg, died Sunday, January 12, 2020. He was born June 20, 1946, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Rev. William and Dorothy Boyd Underwood. Richard is survived by his wife, M. Lucille Lofgren Underwood; a son, Richard P. (Bethany) Underwood, Jr., of New Kensington; two daughters, Dr. Gretchen Underwood (Rev. Robert Schaefer), of Greensburg, and Danielle (Dr. James) Kim, of Sacramento, CA; four grandchildren, Justin, Xavier, Oliver, and Cosima Kim; and a brother, David (Patricia) Underwood. ALEXANDER LAURIE VALENTINE, JR. On the evening of Sunday, January 5, 2020, Alexander Laurie Valentine, Jr. passed away at the age of 81. Born on September 15, 1938, in Braddock, PA to Alexander and Jean Valentine, he attended Carnegie Institute of Technology graduating in 1962 with a degree in electrical engineering. He served in the United States Air Force, achieving the rank of 2nd Lieutenant, until his discharge in 1963. Alexander continued his career at NASA in Houston, Texas as a cartographer working on the Apollo Program for 6 years from its beginning up to Apollo 17. He was part of the team tasked with mapping the moon and identifying the location of “Tranquility Base,” the landing place of the Apollo 11 mission. He then entered private industry, becoming fascinated by emerging technologies in photography, computing, and software. For the rest of his career he contributed to the technological developments of the space age and personal computing revolution while working for the companies Raytheon, Prime Computer, Samsung, and Fluent. His career path eventually brought him to Boston, MA where he earned an MBA in 1978 from Northeastern University. In Boston he met the love of his life Patricia at the Bull and Finch Pub in 1973, marrying her in November 1976 in Sudbury, Massachusetts. They raised their two wonderful children Alexander Laurie Valentine III and Dorothy Jean Valentine on Toxteth Street in Brookline, Massachusetts, instilling in them a love of education and art. With his children grown, he and his wife returned to his hometown of Pittsburgh, PA where he filled his days playing golf, painting portraits, researching his Polish and Scottish heritage, and romancing his wife by tripping the light fantastic dancing at the Phipps Conservatory together. Alexander is survived by his wife Patricia Ann Gallagher, his children Alexander Laurie Valentine III and Dorothy Jean Valentine, his grandchildren Ronan Laurie Valentine, Eli Alexander Bidro, and Cawley Ann Bidro, as well as his daughter-in-law Carla May Baker, son-in-law Carl (Jay) Bidro, sister Susan Comba, and many lifelong friends and extended family members. In accordance with Alex's wishes no memorial services are scheduled at this time. The family is taking this time to grieve his loss and remember a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. BETTY M. (CHURCH) SERENA Age 92, of Mt. Washington, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family. Daughter of the late Robert and Alma Church. Dearly loved wife of the late Domnick Serena. Sister of the late Robert (Theresa) Church and Louetta (Dick) Sieber. Much loved mother of Joann (Larry) Fischio, Donna (Jim) Henderson and Laurie (Gary) Lenigan. Cherished Gram to Denise Grimme, Jeff (Dina Duffy) Fischio, Corinne (James) Dauteuil, Chrissy (Dan Babin) Henderson, Beth (Sara Altman) Henderson and Alex Lenigan. Great Gram and GG to Santino, Ryan, Christian, Reagan and Jackson. Betty is also survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews and cherished friends. Active until the end, Betty loved going to the Mt. Washington Senior Center, playing bingo, cards and going to the casino. She had a warm and beautiful smile that made everyone happy when they met her. She loved her family dearly and was an inspiration to all of them. She was the glue that held us together. She will be profoundly missed. JOHN B. "JUNIE" ROSA II Passed away at his home in Lower Burrell on Friday, January 10, 2020, at the age of 81. John was preceded in death by his parents, John B. and Virginia Rosa; his brothers, Gilbert (Flo) Rosa and Dominick; his first wife, Maria T. Rosa. John is survived by his wife, Jacqueline L. Rosa; his sons, Todd (Sharon), Scott (Lori), John (Mindy), Peppe (Haley), and Niko; his step-daughters, Parice (Mick) Madden and Lou Ann Lobert; his grandchildren, Brenden, Gabrielle, Garrett, Luca, Frankie, Domenic, Dante, Amanda, Mike, Justin, Jessica, Abigail, and Cole; his great grandchildren, Tristyn, Aubrey, and Michael. John was born on April 19, 1938, in Natrona Heights and graduated from Bell Avon with a full athletic football scholarship to Clemson. John was the owner of Rosa Construction and later worked for and retired from Penn Dot. He loved to hunt but his true passion was fly fishing. John also loved spending time with his grandchildren and going to their sporting events. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW 92, Moose Lodge, and Eagles where he spent time with his friends and especially known for his Pizzelles. RICHARD ANDREW MARUSIC Age 93, a resident of the North Hills, passed away peacefully at home on the evening of Friday, January 10, 2020. Born at home in the North Side of Pittsburgh on August 24, 1926, Richard was the oldest of three children. He was predeceased by his brother, Anthony “Tony” Marusic, and his sister, Marie LaFace. Richard joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 18 and proudly served on the USS Patroclus for two years during World War II. After returning to Pittsburgh, he married the love of his life, Dolores (Torp) Marusic in 1950, and they had three children together. Richard started a small business, Richard's Valet dry cleaners, and eventually purchased the local dry cleaning chain Ruby's Cleaners, North Hills, which he proudly owned and operated until he retired at the age of 64. His retirement years were spent playing golf at the Highland Country Club, enjoying vacations in Sanibel Island, Florida, and doting on his 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Richard was a man of great faith and a devout parishioner of St. Sebastian Church in the North Hills for 65 years. Devotion to his family was a driving force in his life. He prayed for each of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren every day. The entire family regularly gathered at his home to share meals and celebrate milestones together, and while Richard was often one of the quieter people in the (very crowded) room, his undivided attention and steadfast love had a huge presence and made a lasting impact on our lives. Richard is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Dolores (Torp) Marusic; his children, Richard Rock Marusic (Deborah), Steven Anthony Marusic (Sheryl), and Joanne Marusic Watterson; his grandchildren, Kristina Marusic, Abigail Marusic (Dan Michelmore), Richard Marusic (Adriane), Julia Tauriello (Ray), Rebecca Nuzum (Jeremy), Rachel Marusic, Steven Marusic, Johanna Watterson, Robert Marusic, Eden Watterson, and Sarah Marusic; his great-grandchildren, Addison Marusic, Evelyn Marusic, Gabriella Nuzum, and Ronan Michelmore; and by Leslie Lawton (mother of Kristina, Abigail, and Steven), Richard Watterson (father of Julia, Johanna, and Eden), and dear family friend Brian Schultz. CLINT LEE SINES Age 28, of Shaler Twp., "Straight outta Millvale," tragically lost his battle on Saturday, January 11, 2020. Beloved son of Keith and the late Carrie; loving brother of Kevin, Keith, and Chrissy; proud uncle of Keith, Alex, Wesley, Ryan, Riley, and Austin; dear nephew of aunt Chris “mom” (James) Skrbin, the late aunt Carine Albinger and many loved aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Although Clint's life was cut short, he lived every moment full throttle. He was an avid lover of disc golf, Harley Davidsons, and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Clint was dearly loved by many and will be greatly missed by all. JEANNETTE NICOLE "JENNY" PRESSMAN On January 8, 2020, Jeannette Nicole Pressman was reunited in death with her father Ted, and her Babcia and Pap-pap. After a long battle with diabetes, she succumbed to the illness in Wilmington, North Carolina. She is survived by her children Austin and Matthew Birch, and Tristan; her siblings Marc, Caryn, Micah, and Deirdre; her mother Valeria; and her stepmother Janice. She was known for her compassion, benevolence and fearlessness. She always gave to everyone when she herself had almost nothing to give. She showed nothing but love to her family and friends up until the end. She continues to live on, demonstrating her benevolence with the donation of several organs so that others could continue to live on after she's gone. She never was afraid to give her opinion and always was outspoken for not just herself but anyone that she truly cared about. She will be profoundly missed by everyone. Tim was also survived by many loving cousins. Tim was an avid car enthusiast and enjoyed going to car shows in Hershey. He enjoyed life's simplest gifts, such as the beach and boat life. RICHARD A. ZAVADA Age 79, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2020, from complications with lung cancer. Richard is survived and will be missed by his daughter, Elizabeth Ward (Bryan); grandchildren, Lucas, Noah, Mason, Gabriel (Layla); his sister, Agnes Dowling; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and many friends. Richard was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nancy; his brother, Thomas Zavada; sister-in-law, Vera Zavada, and brother-in-law, Wilbert Dowling. Richard was born in Braddock, PA to the late Anthony and Wanda Zavada. He was raised in Braddock, East McKeesport, and Uniontown. Richard graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and spent his career traveling the world as a Chemical Engineer with Kvaerner. Richard raised his family in Upper St. Clair and following the passing of his wife he was an active resident of the Lawrenceville neighbor of Pittsburgh. He spent his remaining years with his daughter's family, family in Uniontown, and most recently as a resident of St. Barnabas in Gibsonia. MARJORIE DePAUL Age 89, of Valparaiso, IN, formerly of Pittsburgh, PA, passed away Sunday, January 12, 2020, at home. She was born September 29, 1930, in Pittsburgh to Andrew and Marjorie (Schrader) Lafferty. Marjorie received a B.A. from Duquesne University and her Ph.D. in Education from the University of Pittsburgh. She retired as Assistant Superintendent of Schools at Burgettstown, PA following her service at the Allegheny County Intermediate Unit. Marjorie had been an active volunteer with The Caring Place Women's Shelter in Valparaiso. On August 2, 1952, she married Alseno S. DePaul who preceded her in death in 2004. Survivors include their sons, Andrew DePaul (Carol) of Chicago, IL and Michael DePaul (Sherrie Wolfe) of Cassopolis, MI; sister, Pat Colianni; grandchildren, Michael DePaul (Helen Hunter), Nathan DePaul and Isabel DePaul; her black cat, Missy “O”; and a host of friends.
