REVEREND ROBERT W. HERRMANN Reverend Robert W. Herrmann, 87, former pastor of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Robinson Township, died peacefully on January 12, 2020, after recent cancer treatment. Father Herrmann, known to many as Father Bob, was born on June 23, 1932, in Pittsburgh, the son and youngest child of Rinehart C. and Rose Pauley Herrmann. He was preceded in death by his two sisters, Helen Faller and Ruth Farrell; and three brothers, Charles, Joseph, and Louis Herrmann, and one niece, Julie Sweet. He is survived by twenty loving nieces and nephews, and many great nieces and nephews. Two of his great-nephews were recently ordained priests in the San Francisco Diocese. It was a joy for Father Bob to participate in their ordinations. Father Bob's ties to Pittsburgh were deep rooted. Both of his parents were born here and he lived here all of his life, surrounded by a large, close knit family. Father Bob graduated from St Margaret of Scotland grade school where he was baptized and celebrated his first mass. He is a graduate of Pittsburgh's Central Catholic high school. Father Bob's Uncle Monsignor Andrew Pauley fostered his vocation to the priesthood. He graduated with a B.A. at St Vincent Seminary in Latrobe, PA and a S.T.L. from St. Mary's Seminary and University in Baltimore in 1958 and was ordained at St Paul Cathedral of the Pittsburgh Diocese in 1958. Father Bob was assigned to many Pittsburgh Parishes including, St. Joseph in Duquesne and St. Joseph in Mt. Oliver. He also served as Pastor of St. Michael's Parish, South Side, from 1973-1979. In 1979, he became the pastor of Holy Trinity Parish and served there for twenty- eight years until 2007. After that he retired but continued to remain active in his pastoral ministry, serving numerous parishes in the Pittsburgh Diocese. He returned to Holy Trinity in 2016 and served there in active ministry until his recent illness. Father Bob was a popular priest and deeply loved by his parishioners, family, and friends. He was a good shepherd to all who knew him, touching countless lives through his holiness and compassion. The parishioners of Holy Trinity named one of their church halls in his honor. Father Bob was a man of many interests. He enjoyed sharing his love of nature and the out of doors with others. He was an avid hiker all his life. He completed the northern half of the Appalachian Trial and climbed over 46 peaks. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, biking, swimming and golf. Beginning as a young boy and continuing throughout his life, he spent many, happy summer vacations with his family on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. He was passionate about capturing his outdoor experiences through photography, often carrying a 3-D camera with him in addition to his other cameras and a GPS. Father Bob had a wonderful sense of humor. He grew up surrounded by uncles who loved to tell jokes and humorous stories. Father Bob inherited this gift and shared it with everyone. Father Bob will be greatly missed. He was a cherished part of many lives, a loving presence, and a devoted priest and pastor. DR. JAMES W. HUNDERUP "JIM" Dr. James (Jim) W. Hunderup, MD, died on December 18th surrounded by friends and family after succumbing to injuries suffered in a tragic accident. Jim's final act was to donate his organs adding to the countless lives he saved over the course of his life. A celebration of life will be held in Galveston at a to-be-determined location and date. Jim was born in Rochester NY on April 28, 1968. Growing up in Webster, he was active in swimming and music and was a member of the prestigious Rochester Youth Philharmonic Orchestra. After graduating from Webster High School, Jim attended Virginia Tech where he received his master's degree in engineering. While at Tech he joined the Virginia Tech Rescue Squad, of which he is a lifetime member, and the Blacksburg Rescue Squad saving lives and making life-long friends. It was through these organizations that he decided that his life would be better spent helping others and teaching those that would follow in his footsteps, so he headed to Eastern Virginia Medical School graduating in 1999 and completing his residency in Emergency Medicine at University of Pittsburgh. He headed to UTMB in 2004 where for the last 15 years has served as an Emergency Room Physician and attending physician training the next generation of doctors. Jim is survived by his husband, John Timothy Branstetter; his parents, Lynn and Allan Hunderup; his brother, Peter; sister-in-law, Shanna; niece, Sarah; and nephew, Matthew along with numerous cool cousins. Jim's love of music was well known and connected him to so many people throughout his life. Along with his husband John Timothy, they created and operate Sound Bar, the island's premier karaoke bar. In his life he has touched countless people from all walks of life. He was brilliant, kind, quick-witted, a good friend to many and will be sorely missed. For the past twenty-five years he, along with Dr. Anita Maybach, have run a scholarship fund that they founded and operate which each year awards a scholarship to a deserving member of the Virginia Tech Rescue Squad. INGEBORG H. BLYTHE Passed away peacefully at home on January 13, 2020, in the company of family. Born in Frankfurt, Germany in 1925, Inge immigrated to the United States in 1927 with her parents, the late George and Pauline Sauer. Upon their arrival, she resided with her family in Michigan, first on a farm and then in the Detroit area. Inge served in the Navy WAVES during WWII, where she met her first husband, the late Lewis O. Smith; they married in 1946. After the war, they traveled extensively to various postings, including numerous sites around the Pacific, San Diego, Arlington and New London. In 1969, Inge married her second husband, the late Thomas V. Blythe, another Navy veteran and moved to the Pittsburgh area. They resided in the Glenshaw area for almost 50 years where she also worked for a local law firm. Inge moved to the Bradfordwoods area in 2010. Inge was predeceased by her sister, Eleanor Cantrell (Gene). She is survived by her stepdaughter, Kathleen Blythe Thomas (David); her niece, Rosemary Cantrell; and her nephew, Craig Cantrell. He was born September 23, 1966, in Jeannette, the son of Barbara (Heil) Wilker, of North Huntingdon and the late Donald R. Wilker. Don was employed as a machinist in charge of quality control for Cleaveland Price, of Trafford. He was a member of the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, in North Huntingdon. Don was an avid competitive bowler, with two 300 games on his record and enjoyed skiing and was a true motorcycle enthusiast. In addition to his mother he is survived by his wife of nearly seven years, Jennifer (Chytil) Wilker; a sister, Brenda Wilker, of North Huntingdon; an uncle, Bruce Heil, of North Huntingdon; mother-in-law, Catherine Morrow, of West Homestead; brother-in-law, Bill (Nicola Dempsey) Chytil; niece and nephew Olivia and Liam Dempsey. GEORGE HOWARD HOFFMAN, ESQ. Age 81, of Whitehall, quietly passed away on Sunday, January 12, 2020, from complications of Parkinson's. George is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Katherine Mary (Walsh). Loving father of four children: Deborah (Louis Grieco), George, Jr. (Claire), Jeffrey, and Susan DeCesare (Nicholas). Also survived by 11 grandchildren: Louise (Christopher), David (Casara), Jeffrey (Samantha), Chelsea (Jordan), Matthew (Brigit), Chloe, Thomas, Zoe, Grace, George, Olivia; and seven great-grandchildren, Daniel, Vivien, Liam, Nora, Celeste, Benjamin and Jackson. Loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend to many, George lived a productive and self-sacrificing life and now has his eternal reward. Born on August 4, 1938, son of John B. and Bertha Hoffman of Brighton Rd. on the North Side. Preceded by his brothers, Joseph and John C. "Jack" Hoffman and his sister, Helen and survived by his sister, Annette. An ardent North-Sider and proud German-American, George attended St. Leo's Grade School and North Catholic High School. He excelled at baseball and basketball in his youth and adolescence. Later, he enjoyed coaching girls' softball for his daughter Susan's teams. Graduated in 1960 from Duquesne University (where he met the love of his life, Katherine) and cum laude from Duquesne Law School in 1963. He practiced real estate and family law for nearly 60 years. George approached the law with the same type of gusto as his TV hero, Perry Mason. Hoffman brought that passion and zeal to his years as an officer of the court where he assisted hundreds of his clients through difficult and challenging times. He gained many friendships over the years with his legal family in the Allegheny County Courts and across the profession. In 2014, the American Bar Association of Allegheny County recognized him for over 50 years of distinguished service. George valued his volunteer position on the Baldwin Borough Zoning Board, which he chaired for several decades. He was an active parishioner and generous supporter of St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin for the past 52 years. Making others laugh was George's special gift. He had a well-earned reputation as a prankster and jokester. George prized classic movies and tv programs, especially the old horror films. He would often act out scary scenes comedically to spook kids of several generations. George particularly loved being surrounded by his ever-expanding family during holidays, joyous celebrations, vacations and get-togethers. JOHN W. COCHENOUR Age 78, of North Huntingdon, died Sunday, January 12, 2020, at the UPMC East Monroeville. He was born August 11, 1941, in McKeesport, a son of the late John J. and Lillian (Irwin) Cochenour. Prior to his retirement, John was an American History teacher for the Elizabeth Forward School District at Elizabeth Forward High School, where he also coached basketball. He was a member of the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, in North Huntingdon and the Penns Woods Civic Association. John had a personality that was larger than life. He was well loved by many people. John liked to joke around and make people laugh with his funny stories. He spent many happy times at his cottage with his family playing pinochle and horseshoes. He liked going to the casino and playing "the digits." The greatest joy of his life, however, was his grandchildren. He often attended their basketball, baseball, hockey and volleyball games, as well as school plays. He will be truly missed by many people. PEARL M. McKEE Age 103, of York, died at 3:07 a.m. Saturday, January 11, 2020, at SpiriTrust Lutheran in the Village at Sprenkle Drive. She was the wife of the late Harry E. McKee. Born December 21, 1916 in Etna, a daughter of the late George E. and Anna Marie (Michael) Neff, she was a 1934 graduate of Etna High School. She was retired as the Assistant Manager of the Lutheran Church Supply Store in Pittsburgh, and had been a member of First English Lutheran Church in Sharpsburg, and St. Michael and All Angels Lutheran Church, Spring Garden. Mrs. McKee is survived by a son, The Rev. Thomas E. McKee, and his wife, The Rev. Judith A. McKee, of York; two grandchildren, Michael P. McKee, and his wife, Kristin, and Sarah R.M. Toney, and her husband, Nicholas; and two great-grandchildren, Kennedy L. McKee, and Micah B. McKee. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, William, George and Sgt. Ralph Ness. Friends will be received on Friday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the BOCK FUNERAL HOME, LTD., 1500 Mt. Royal Blvd., Glenshaw, where a Funeral Service will be held at 2 p.m. with Rev. Cherished father of Michael (Tara) Holzwarth, Edward (Sarah) Holzwarth and David Holzwarth. Loving grandfather of Jocelyn, Lavender, Trent and Ichigo. Brother of Kathy (Dennis) Geisler, Judith (Lyndon) Leffler, Jennette (Martin) Kroll, Anne Sexton, Margaret, Edward, James and Thomas Holzwarth and the late Charles Holzwarth. ROBERT D. BYRNES, SR. Of Shadyside on Sunday, January 12, 2020, age 74. Beloved husband of Elizabeth R. Byrnes. Loving father of Robert D. II (Rosann), Gregory, David, Lisa Maggio (Doug), Michelle, and Daneen Dickson (Brian); Pop Pop of Nicholas, Michael and Brittany Slahetka, Katie, Julia, Joey, Maria, Dominic and Nicco Maggio, Victoria DeLeonibus, and Matthew and Brianna Dickson. The last of a great generation of 6 brothers and sisters. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Bob worked at D'Appolonia Engineering for 20 years, traveling extensively for work around the county. The word survivor was written for Bob Byrnes. He fought cancer for over 20 years, battling to the end. Friends received at McCABE BROS., INC. EDWARD G. DUSS Age 92, of Shaler Twp., on Monday, January 13, 2020. Beloved husband of 71 years to Jeanne C. Huber Duss; loving father of Darlene (John) Bottegal, James (Kathy) Duss and the late Edward A. Duss and Barbara J. Duss; proud grandfather of Jeana (Jeff) Cole, James (Alicia) Duss and Grant (Jamie) Duss; dear great-grandfather of Abigail and Samantha Cole and Addison and Blake Duss; brother of the late Albert Duss and Lillian Bookser. Ed enlisted in the Navy Seabees stationed in the Pacific during WWII. He loved serving the Shaler Twp. community as a police officer for 36 years, 25 as a Lieutenant. After retiring, he sat on the Shaler Twp. Board of Commissioners for 24 years. Shaler Township honored him by dedicating Duss Park on Friday Road in his name.
