LOUELLA EMANUEL KOSTOPOLOS (PRESVYTERA) On Friday, March 6, 2020, Presvytera Louella Emanuel Kostopolos, aged 89, of McCandless. Beloved wife of the late Rev. John W. Kostopolos; mother of Stephanie (Stephen) Sedor and James (Tracy) Kostopolos. Grandmother of James, Natalie, and Melanie Kostopolos and Valentina Sedor. She adored and loved her children and grandchildren. Her lifelong involvement in her church included membership in the Daughters of Penelope Alcyone Chapter, teaching Sunday School, singing in the church choir, and serving in the Philoptochos Ladies Auxiliary. A former reference librarian, she will dearly missed by many and memories of her will be forever cherished. Friends received Wednesday 3-7:30 p.m. at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 985 Providence Blvd., Pgh., PA 15237. ANN RUTH On Monday, March 9, 2020, age 88, of Churchill. Loving mother of Robert E. (Wendy), Steven C. (Marjie), the late Kelly, Andree A., and Bradford L. Ruth (Karen). Also survived by eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her sisters, Elsie Lou and Jesse Marie. Ann was born in Clarksburg, WV, and raised in Athens, OH and moved to Pittsburgh in 1963. She spent the early years of her married life raising her children and then worked as an administrative assistant and medical secretary. She was an avid runner and completed over 26 marathons in her running career. She ran with South Park Runners and other recreational running clubs. She enjoyed travel in her later years and played the piano. HELEN EDITH PETCHEL Of Industry entered eternal life on March 8, 2020 at 97 years young. Helen was born March 3, 1923 in New Brighton. She was the daughter of the late George and Edith Perelli Freed of New Brighton. Her beloved husband, John Petchel, preceded Helen in the next life. Helen lives on through her children; Karen (Ron) Sabados of White Oak, PA, John (Cathy) Petchel of Bethel Park, PA and Bob (Kathe) Petchel of Charlottesville, VA; and five grandchildren, Michael (Heather) Petchel, Pittsburgh, Ben Petchel, Pittsburgh, Stephanie Petchel, Pittsburgh, Meg Petchel, Los Angeles, CA, Molly (Rob Hichens) Petchel, Santa Barbara, CA. Helen was an only child, but a large and loving family surrounded her throughout her long life. This included her grandparents, Caesar and Angelina Perelli, who immigrated from Verase in northern Italy and their children and their families; Helen's mother Edith Perelli Freed, Charles Perelli, Mary Perelli Trozzo, Lucy Perelli Smith, Margaret Perelli Perrott, and Julia Perelli. Helen had a very rich life growing up in the Beaver Valley. There were many family and friend gatherings in New Brighton's ‘Hunky Alley' and Holy Family Catholic Church. She attended New Brighton High School and Duquesne University. There she met her future husband, John while she was on the baton twirling team. Following graduation, John was signed to play football in the NFL with the Cleveland Rams. Helen spent the next four years traveling and supporting John's career with the Cleveland Rams and Pittsburgh Steelers. Afterwards, Helen and John settled in Industry when John accepted a teaching and head football coaching position at Midland HS. During this time, Helen immersed herself in supporting the Athletic Boosters and other activities at Midland and Western Beaver High Schools. Helen was a Pittsburgh area sports fan of the highest level, especially supporting the Steelers where her husband John played. Helen and John were avid bridge players, hosting many ‘Ohioview Bridge Club' gatherings. Helen was also a real music enthusiast, always extolling the talents of Michael Buble', Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra and many others from her era along with the Lincoln Park students she followed. Helen was a longtime volunteer at the Industry Borough elections. She took great pride that she had voted in every local, state and national election since 1944. Helen was a true follower of the Catholic faith, serving as a Eucharistic minister at the old St. Christine's Catholic Church in Ohioview. Three passions defined Helen's time here, faith, family and friends. NORMAN C. ROSFELD, JR. Age 94, of Green Tree, our beloved patriot, husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, died peacefully on March 10, 2020 following a valiant fight with pulmonary issues. Devoted husband of the late Jean (McGough), beloved father of Alison Strome (Bill) and Arden Vernacchio, adored grandfather of Will (Vivia), Sara (Justin) and Peter Strome, Emily (Joshua) Snyder and Robert (Elena) Vernacchio. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his two dear brothers, Robert and Arthur, and his parents, Florence (Cassidy) and Norman, Sr. Norman grew up in Brookline, graduated from South Hills High School in 1943, and enlisted in the Army Air force as soon as he was eligible. He was a radio operator on a B-29 in the Pacific Theatre during WWII, and on August 14, 1945 was part of the last raid of the war in Nagoya, Japan. He was, until the end, very proud of his service to his country. His prodigious artistic talent led him to Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon), where he obtained a fine arts degree and met the love of his life, Jean. Two gifted artists, they pursued their art while raising their two daughters. Norman was an award-winning water colorist, a member of the Associate Artists of Pittsburgh, and a talented art director for many major corporate accounts while employed by Ruter and Bragdon, Ketchum McCloud and Grove, and Herbick and Held. He was also an accomplished musician, whose piano music filled their home. He also was a devoted Pittsburgh sports fan. Even with his many talents, Norman will be best remembered as a kind, thoughtful, caring person. A special recognition must be paid to the devoted care giving of his wife, and also those people who cared for him in his final months. Thanks to the wonderful staff at Gallagher Hospice, Brookdale Mt. Lebanon, and Preferred Care at Home for their loving care. BEVERLY E. SCHMIDER-BIGGS Age 57, residing in St. Augustine, FL and originally from Pittsburgh, PA passed away suddenly on March 2, 2020. Beverly was predeceased by her parents, Theodore E. Schmider and Barbara Prescott and two sisters, Barbara Ann Schmider and JoAnn Schmider-White. She is survived by her daughter, Sarah Biggs and her two puppies, Scooter and Oliver, along with her siblings, Theodore Schmider, Jr. (Yolanda), Diane Valentino (Rocco Cersosimo), Kathleen Evanochko, Denise Cervone (Ray Gwon), Kevin Prescott (Lisa), Lori Prescott, Beverly Prescott, nieces and nephews. Beverly had a true passion to be in the medical field but did not have a plan so she enlisted in the Armed Forces from 1985 to 1992. She successfully completed Combat Medical Specialist Course in June 1985 and Physical Therapy Specialist Course in 1986. Beverly always wanted to further her education in nursing. She graduated from nursing school in 2008 and then received her bachelor's degree in nursing in 2019. She did take a year off working in the hospital to pursue travel nursing in Saudi Arabia and then went back to Jacksonville, FL. A service was held in St. Augustine, FL on March 5, 2020 to celebrate her life with all of her friends and co-workers and it was very comforting to know that she was so loved. In lieu of flowers, Beverly was a huge advocate for pet adoptions and animal rescue. Please make donations to your local shelter or pet adoption agency. WAYNE A. SCHOLAR Age 83, of Monroeville, passed away March 8, 2020. He was born January 4, 1937, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Ned and Helen Scholar. Wayne spent his childhood in Baldwin, PA. He was a proud graduate of Duquesne University where he obtained both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Education. Wayne spent his entire career serving East Allegheny High School as a teacher, football coach, and Principal. He also served in the U.S. Army as an expert in artillery, stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. Wayne's passions include his family, Pittsburgh sports, deer hunting, and his beloved springer spaniels, Barney and Charger. He loved to spend his time reading, watching Steelers football, completing crossword puzzles with his wife Nancy, and browsing the net on his iPad. He was a proud supporter of the NRA. Wayne is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Nancy; children, Craig (Christine) Scholar, of Redondo Beach, CA, Lisa (Gregory) Burt, of Irvine, CA, Wayne P. Scholar of Pittsburgh, PA; and grandchildren, Samuel Craig Scholar, Haley Lowe Burt, Amanda Scholar Kingman and Briana Scholar. MARY ANN DiVITTORIO Age 88, of Greensburg, formerly of Pittsburgh, died Monday, March 9, 2020 in St. Anne Home, Greensburg. She was born in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late Charles and Helen Anzalone. She was a member of the former Immaculate Conception Church, Bloomfield. Prior to retirement, she worked as the Librarian of Immaculate Conception School and later on as branch manager of Pittsburgh Savings and Loan in Bloomfield. She enjoyed sewing, bowling, cooking, and spending time with her grandchildren. Mary Ann was preceded in death by her late husband, Anthony J. DiVittorio and great-granddaughter, Reagan Alexandra. Mary Ann is survived by a son, Robert DiVittorio of Fort Lauderdale, FL; three daughters, Lynda Lazzaro (Theodore) of Greensburg, Nancy Parkinson (Charles) of Pittsburgh and Debra Conte (Gregory) of San Francisco, CA; his grandchildren, Michael Lazzaro, Briana Kane, Gina Kriger, Charles, Anthony and Brady Parkinson, Olivia, Adriana and Ava Conte; great-grandchildren, Gianna and Ryan Kane and Kaden and Wyatt Kriger; also her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Louis and Rose DiVittorio, also many nieces and nephews. GERALDINE (FIGAS) JOHNSTON Age 85, formerly of Scott Twp., died peacefully on March 10, 2020, at The Baptist Home. Mother of Elizabeth Ann (Johnston) Briney and William Rice Johnston, Jr.; sister of Frances (Figas) Costantini and George J. Figas; sister-in-law of Carol Deniziuk Figas, 11 nieces and nephews, and many great and great-great-nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her brother, Edmund Figas and sister, Dorothy (Figas) Pulcinski. Gerri grew up on Polish Hill and attended St. John the Baptist Grade School and High School. She graduated from the Pittsburgh Hospital School of Nursing in 1955. Gerri served in the Navy Nurse Corps in 1956 and 1957, then worked as a nurse or personal care giver until she was 77. She was an avid crafter, who leaves behind many quilts and cross-stitch pieces. Daughter of the late Jack and Jean (Olysav) Cloherty. Loving and devoted wife of Robert R. Kapp. Beloved mother of Beth Ann (Dave) Crousey, Robert R. MARY LEE SCHERM Of Forest Hills, age 73, returned home to her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, March 10, 2020. She is survived by her daughter, Margret Mellon and her siblings, Catherine Ferguson, Elizabeth Michael, and Steven Scherm. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold Scherm and Anna (Burkhart) Scherm, and by her sister, Louise Ruby. Mary Lee was born on April 9, 1946. She graduated from Wilkinsburg High School in 1964, where one of her fondest memories was leading the band down Penn Avenue as Head Majorette. She went on to graduate from Point Park College. So kind and considerate, she served as a caseworker for PA Dept. of Public Welfare for 35 years. Mary Lee most recently enjoyed spending time with her loving cat, Sweetie Mew, trips to shopping malls with her sister, Libby, and visits from her daughter. Regular highlights of those visits included stops at Dairy Queen, drives around town to admire displays of Christmas lights, strolls through Phipps Conservatory, and going to Penguins games. As per her wishes, there will be no public visitation. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date in Central Florida where all of her siblings currently reside. Burial will take place at Wm Penn Memorial Cemetery in Churchill. DEAN ALAN RINELLA Age 70, of White Oak passed away peacefully on March 10, 2020 at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in McKeesport, Pennsylvania on April 25, 1949 to the late Samuel J. Rinella and Helen (Zabelsky) Rinella. Dean received a BS in Political Science and History from the University of Pittsburgh in 1977. He received a Master of Public Management (MPM) degree from the Heinz School of Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University in 1985. He served his country in the US Army from 1972-1976 with a Tour of Duty in Vietnam as a Cryptographer. For his service, he received a Bronze Star and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). He worked as a Relief Foreman at United States Steel, National Works in McKeesport and a Testing Coordinator at the Allegheny County Community College, Evening Division, Northside Campus. He is survived by his wife of over 41 years, Rosemary “Rosie” (Smith) Rinella, daughter, Jennifer Rinella, son, Sean Rinella, and his daughter-in-law, Rachna Unnithan. Arrangements are private.
