JOSEPH L. CALIHAN, JR. AGE 82,...
JOSEPH L. CALIHAN, JR. Age 82, a longtime resident of Fox Chapel, died peacefully in his home at Longwood at Oakmont on May 21. We all will miss him, said Bishop David A. Zubik. He helped so many people in so many ways. But his impact of his leadership will live on in all of us, and it will live on in many of our religious, civic, and private institutions. Joe was born and raised in Rochester, New York, where he met Brenda, his wife and partner of 57 years. She was the love of his life, and he always was quick to note that marrying her was the best decision he ever made. After graduating from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, he moved to Pittsburgh in 1961 to enter the management training program at Mellon Bank. In 1970, he pursued his passions for entrepreneurship and education by joining Bradford Schools, becoming CEO in 1973. In 1987, he founded Bradford Capital Partners, through which he helped a number of local entrepreneurs build successful companies. He had incredible sayings that got to the heart of almost any matter, said Katherine Kennedy, his daughter, but one of his favorites was With privilege goes responsibility.'" Bishop Zubik added, Without Joe's leadership and financial support, a number of Diocesan Initiativesincluding the Extra Mile schools and the Deacon Formation Programwould not be what they are today. We honored Joe's and Brenda's long-term faith and contributions with The Church ALIVE Award in 2017. He was generous with his time and financial support for many charitable organizations, including serving as a trustee or board member for Extra Mile Educational Foundation, Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Foundation, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania, Summer Search, and others. Starting in 2014, he founded and focused on nurturing Mansmann Foundation, which has created a support network to help hundreds of entrepreneurs in underserved local markets. He is survived by his wife, Brenda, and his four children, Marty Calihan (Jenni) of Pittsburgh; Anne Kelley (Mark) of Wellesley, MA; Molly Lokteff (Dan) of Los Gatos, CA; and Katherine Kennedy (Duncan) of San Francisco, CA. Papa also leaves 14 loving grandchildren, Maclean, Joseph L., III (Trip), Isabel, and Jack Calihan; Ryan, Meghan, Lauren, and Owen Kelley; Jacob, Morgan, and Jane Lokteff; and Charlie, Joey, and Kate Kennedy. He will be remembered as the glue' that made our family so close, offered his daughter, Molly Lokteff. It was amazing how he really loved each of his fourteen grandchildren, and they each knew and really loved him. He was exceptional in how he really connected with so many people, said his daughter, Anne Kelley. Even when the pancreatic cancer was diagnosed, he immediately used it as an opportunity to bring us all closer to him and each other. His son, Marty, chimed in, He really understood how to be a friend. And he loved his golf. And YPO. And just making life fun. I think he loved and embraced and pursued every side of life. And it was contagious. Friends will be received following CDC Guidelines on Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at JOHN A. FREYVOGEL SONS, INC., 4900 Centre Avenue at Devonshire Street (freyvogelfuneralhome.com). His faith never wavered when his beloved Pat left this world in 1978. He faithfully sought strength from God as he continued to raise their children by himself. His faith never wavered when he was called to care for his wife Theresa as she succumbed to Alzheimer's. His faith never wavered as he too was diagnosed with this disease. He was active in CIT Baseball, Crafton Cougar Football and St. Philip Parish Council, where he was a faithful member for the past 60 years. He never missed a St. Philip, Bishop Canevin, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, or Duquesne basketball game while his children and grandchildren participated. We would like to acknowledge the outstanding care we received from the VA Home Health Care Team, especially Dr. McQuillan and Anne Laughlin, RN. We greatly appreciate and would also like to deeply thank the caregivers from Debbie's Angels, without whom we would not have been able to grant Dad's last wish: to remain in his home. We would also like to thank the nurses from Compassionate Care Hospice; although we only needed you for a brief time, your attentiveness made all the difference in the end. So today, Dad, we are trusting God's Plan. We know you lived your entire life with the acceptance that the greatest reward was to follow. Until we meet again, Love to Mom.
