MARATTA Dr. JAN W. Dr. Jan W. Maratta, a dedicated physician, horseman, farmer; cherished husband, Daddy and Pappap, passed away suddenly and peacefully at his home on Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at the age of 73. He was born in Sewickley on December 10, 1943, to the late John Webster and Ruth Ann (Marti) Maratta. Jan was a lifelong resident of the Coraopolis/Moon area where he and his wife, Carolyn, proudly raised their five daughters on their horse farm, Cranmar Acres, at 1345 Coraopolis Hts. Rd. Jan was a 1961 graduate of Coraopolis High School. His education continued with a B.A. in 1965 from Washington and Jefferson College (Washington, PA). He earned his M.D. in 1970 from University of Bologna (Bologna, Italy). Jan's general internship was in 1971-1972 at St. Francis Hospital (Pittsburgh, PA) with his surgical residency in 1972-1977. He proudly served as Chief Resident- Surgery in 1976-1977 at Allegheny General Hospital (Pittsburgh, PA). He fulfilled his continuing education for the American Medical Association and in 2017 was presented with the Physicians Recognition Award. He thrived and loved his vocation, taking care of many with surgical needs, as a General Surgeon in private practice from 1977 to the very day that he passed away. His staff appointments included the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Beaver/Aliquippa, PA 1998-2000, Ohio Valley General Hospital in McKees Rocks, PA 1977-2007, Suburban General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA 1979-2000, and Sewickley Valley Hospital, Sewickley, PA 1977 to present. His peers recognized him as a leader electing him as Staff Secretary/Treasurer in 1990-1992, Staff Vice President in 1992-1994, Staff President in 1994-1996 all at Sewickley Valley Hospital, and as a member of the Board of Directors for Sewickley Valley Healthcare Services in 1992-1996. He was a member of the Allegheny County Medical Society, American Medical Association, American Society of Abdominal Surgeons, PA Medical Society, Pittsburgh Medical Bureau, Board of Directors and Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons. He was regarded as a pioneer in laser and laparoscopic surgery. Jan worked tirelessly as a surgeon, caring for many in the community and providing for his family. Jan's work ethic and dedication extended to the care of his horses and property, spending the little downtime that he had training horses, mowing the fields on his blue tractor, planting his garden or hunting in the woods. He and his wife created a loving and supportive home for family and friends who were always welcome around the dinner table. In his later years, Jan enjoyed watching his 17 grandchildren thrive as he proudly attended their horse shows, dance recitals, and sporting events. His hard work and commitment to his family was a constant source of inspiration to his daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren. He was and will always be "Jan the Man." Jan was the cherished husband for 52 years of Carolyn (Millner) Maratta; loving Daddy of Kriss (Dr. Francis) Lally, Megan (the late T. Scott) Peters, Jamee (Mark) Hahn, Caryn (Eric) Kopay and Susan (Gary) Overton; and the proud Pappap of Maura, Devin, Casey Lally; Alyssa, Christian, Camryn Peters; Emily, Ethan, Ellie Hahn; Justin, Katie, Ryan, Carter Kopay; Alfie, Jack, Josie, Lizzie Overton; brother of the late Craig Maratta KIA in Vietnam; uncle of Natalie Kopejzna. Visitation Tuesday and Wednesday 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at COPELAND'S MOON TOWNSHIP, 981 Brodhead Rd. where service will be held on Thursday, May 25, 2017, at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Coraopolis Cemetery.
