KOCIAN HELEN J. Age 92, of Houston, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 18, 2019, in UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh. She was born on August 1, 1926, in Canonsburg to Frank and Josephine Gruden Ferlich, who preceded her in death. On May 15, 1948, she married her beloved husband, Robert J. Kocian, who passed away on September 6, 2012. Helen was a lifetime member of the SNPJ. Her family was the center of her life. She was the ultimate homemaker and caretaker for her family and was especially devoted to her husband during his lifetime. She enjoyed being outdoors in her vegetable garden, often sharing her bounty with her friends and family. She also was a fabulous cook; nurturing and demonstrating love to her family by often making them delicious meals. Mrs. Kocian was the last member of her immediate family. Surviving are her devoted daughters, Linda Kocian of Houston, who resided with her, and Carey Lynn (Ric) Martell of Harrisburg; three granddaughters, Carey Anne Welsh, Erica Martell and Gina Gutshall; her great-grandchildren, Josephine and Abel; and two nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, William Ferlich. Helen's family and friends will deeply miss and fondly cherish their memories of her. HUMES WINONA (WIGHTMAN) Ola Winona Humes, age 92, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away suddenly on April 16, 2019 in Sewickley, PA. Born June 19, 1926 in Wichita Falls, Texas, Winona was the daughter of the late Columbus Brooks and Pinky Winona Cotten Wightman. She was preceded in death by her brother, Pinkney Sherwood Wightman. Winona studied medical technology at Baylor University Medical Center, and met her late husband, Alexander B. Humes, M.D., at the Sheppard Air Force base. The family moved to Pennsylvania and yet Winona always made sure to make an annual trip to Texas. Winona is survived by her son, Alex (Mary Ramirez); her daughter, Jane; and granddaughters, Alexandra, Beatrix and Christina Smith. Her granddaughters have followed in her career path in the medical field and are all nurses. Winona is also fondly remembered by her nephew, George Douds and his family. Winona had many interests in life. For many years, she bought and sold antiques and decorated her lovely home with pretty china and glass collections, and early American furniture. Winona enjoyed cooking and had many special southern recipes, such as gumbo and pecan pie. She taught Sunday school at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Upper St. Clair. Winona was a member of a local bridge club, had a passion for gardening, and dearly loved her pet dogs and cats. She was extremely proud of her Choctaw and English heritage. Winona will be deeply missed by all. Funeral arrangements will be private and she will be buried in Texas. ACEVEDO FREDERIC A., M.D. Fox Chapel resident Frederic Acevedo passed away in the early hours of Wednesday, April 17, 2019, after a long struggle with renal cancer. Born on July 17, 1957, in Dumaguete City, Philippines, Frederic moved to Manila at a young age. He graduated salutatorian from La Salle Green Hills and summa cum laude in Pre-Medicine from the University of the Philippines. He went to the University of the Philippines Medical School, where he distinguished himself as a top ranked student and met the love of his life, Deborah Co. He immigrated to the United States in 1984 and completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Mercy Hospital in Buffalo, NY and a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care at SUNY Buffalo. After moving to Pittsburgh in 1989, he began private practice at West Penn Hospital and helped to found AIRMED, specializing in pulmonary, sleep medicine, and critical care. He was the director of the ICU at Butler Memorial Hospital, where he worked for 25 years. As president of the Philippine American Medical Society, he led a medical mission in 2013 to his family's ancestral home in Roxas City, Philippines. When Rick wasn't working long hours on call in the ICU, he was an accomplished amateur photographer. His stunning photographs document his love for family, travel, and nature. He also enjoyed watching the birds in his backyard; classical, jazz, and 70s music; Apple products; and spending time with his family. He was a fan and supporter of the Pittsburgh Symphony, WESA, the National Aviary, and the Carnegie Museums. He is survived by his wife, Deborah, and their two daughters, Marisa and Isabel. He was a son of the late Atty. Ambrosio Acevedo; he is also survived by his mother, Purita; and five siblings, Bruce, Raymund, Aurora, Jaime, and Dominic, who live in Manila. Frederic will be remembered for his humility, patience, quiet intelligence, and incredible kindness. He was a role model to family members, friends, and coworkers alike.
