She and Dale traveled throughout the United States and Japan on assignment as a military family. Jeannie later worked in Pittsburgh at the Bell Telephone Company as a telephone operator and then as a clerk in the Engineering Dept. She credited her mother with helping her get an interview because she worked in the Medical Dept and knew "everyone." Jeannie loved her job and had many friends. BESTERMAN KENNETH J. It is with great sadness that the family of Kenneth Besterman announces his passing on Thursday, April 18, 2019, after a courageous fight with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. He was born on November 5, 1946, in Pittsburgh, PA. He was the very devoted and loving husband of Janet (Joyce) Besterman; brother of Neil Besterman; brother-in-law of Joseph Joyce, Jr.; and uncle of Kim and Chad Williams; also survived by many cousins. Ken proudly served his country as a Combat Medic in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. He served as Past Junior Vice and Board of Directors Member of Post 3945 in Morningside. He was a sports enthusiast and participated in Little League baseball, softball, racquet ball, and golf, as well as being a dedicated fan of the Steelers, Pirates, and Pens. He was known for his extensive collection of sports team ball caps, which he frequently wore. He retired after a 35 year career with H.J. Heinz and Co. and Del Monte Foods. During their 44 years of marriage, Ken and Janet enjoyed traveling, and in their retirement, their love of travel took them on countless adventures to many cities in the U.S. Some of their favorite destinations were Las Vegas, Savannah, GA, Charleston, SC, St. Augustine, FL, Cape May, NJ, and New York City. He will be remembered as a fun loving person. Kind and caring, with a big heart, he never hesitated to help someone in need and will be missed by all those who have known him. The family is grateful to the physicians, nurses, and staff of UPMC Hillman Cancer Center for their compassionate care. KANIECKI ROBERT M. "BOB" Of Ross Twp., on Thursday, April 18, 2019. Bob served in the Army Air Force for four years. He studied languages at Syracuse University and was a Russian interpreter during the Korean War. He was awarded a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Rutgers University. He is survived by his wife, Jean, of nearly 60 years; three sons, Robert (Christine), James (Denise), Brian; and nine beautiful grandchildren who called him "Pop Pop"; and sister, Eileen (Brennan); and sister-in-law, Eileen (Janasik); and many nieces and nephews. He spent his career in the steel industry, which took him around the world, and rose to the rank of Vice President. He became an "honorary Irishman," traveling to Ireland 28 times. Bob belonged to several Irish organizations: Ancient Order of Hibernians, whose motto is "friendship, unity and Christian charity"; President of Conway Mill Trust, a non-profit group working to better the lives of people in the North of Ireland; Treasurer of Irish American Unity Conference, working for a peaceful and united Ireland. He served as Treasurer of Pittsburgh Ceili Club, which promotes Irish dance and culture, plus All Ireland Social Group and Gaelic Arts Society. Bob and Jean were honored by the Irish Echo newspaper as Community Champions for their work in the Irish community, and in 2009 he was honored to be an invited guest at the White House on St. Patrick's Day. Dick and his wife, Ann, enjoyed vacationing in Naples for some 22 years and, although retired, he stayed busy helping friends in Florida. Beloved husband of Ann E. NEAL MARTHA ANN "M.A." ASHCRAFT KAHLE Age 89, of Washington, died on Wednesday, April 17, 2019, in her home. She was born on February 24, 1930, in Monongahela, a daughter of the late Harry John and Nellie Sickels Ashcraft. Martha was a 1947 graduate of Monongahela High School, and graduated from, The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, the Royal Horticultural School of London and Computer Tech. She worked at the Enchanted Village, and Mace Electronics. Martha was the President of the Pittsburgh Figure Skating Club, and was Chairperson of the 1983 National Figure Skating Championships in Pittsburgh. Martha worked at the William G. Neal Funeral Homes, doing computer programming and aftercare support. Martha wrote and published a genealogy book, The Ashcraft Family, Descendants of Daniel that continues to sell on Amazon. Mrs. Neal was a member of MENSA, and DAR, and enjoyed going on cruises, reading, crossword puzzles, bird watching, gardening, and going to dinner. Her greatest joy was spending time with family and friends, and especially her daughter Sheri, who will miss her more than words can say. Her name was rarely mentioned without the word "classy." She exuded class, compassion and generosity. This world is a lesser place without her in it. Martha received incredible care from her caregivers from the Caring Mission, Ruth, Sherri, Tina, Kelley and Leolia. Martha's daughter Sheri, thanks the Caring Mission, and Martha's caregivers from the bottom of her heart. In 1948, she married Donald Foster Kahle, who died on July 1, 1976. On October 18, 1986, she married William G. Neal, Jr., who died on April 5, 2014; surviving are two sons, Robert (Claire) Kahle, and Gary (Theresa) Kahle; a daughter, Sheri Kahle; two stepsons, William (Debra) Neal, III, and Michael Neal; a stepdaughter, Stacey (Gary) Snook; a brother, George (Cathy Glad) Ashcraft; a sister, Jane Necciai; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and her grand dog, Lucy. Deceased are two sisters, Harriet Pippert and Marion Legler; a stepdaughter, Karen Neal; and a grandson, Ronald Lyle, III. Helen was a proud mother and home maker, noted for her cooking. She loved to prepare meals for her family and their friends. Two aspects of her life with utmost importance to Helen were her deep Catholic faith and the love she had for her family. Friends are welcome on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. at PATRICK T.
